Toddler accidentally kills himself after finding gun on couch | US News

A 2-year-old boy has accidentally shot himself after finding a gun on the sofa of his Michigan home.

The toddler’s mother’s boyfriend has been charged with manslaughter.

Markus Nevills Jr, 22, contested the charges in his first court appearance.

According to a court document, Nevilles told police he was “wandering” while smoking marijuana and was scrolling on his phone when the shooting occurred.

“I don’t understand that. I want to see what they say it was my fault. I didn’t shoot him,” Nevilles told the court.

Kiaire McCoy apparently found the gun at his Kentwood home and shot himself Friday.

“It sounds like a horrific accident and there was no criminal intent there,” defense attorney Richard Zambon said.

Michigan will implement stricter gun laws in 2024.

Gun owners will be required to place their firearms in locked storage boxes if children are present, and anyone who wants to buy a gun must undergo a background check.
