Taylorville small business’s big dreams come true

Taylorville, Illinois. (WCIA) – In just over a year, a local sustainable store continues to thrive in a small-town setting.

Down to Earth Sustainability, located just off Court Square in downtown Taylorville, offers a wide variety of items, including face wash, laundry detergent, shampoo and conditioner, dish soap, toilet bombs, and more, with refill options.

Owner Jessica Oyler started the business in 2017, taking a 1979 VW bus to various farmers markets and other events. She has since sold the car and opened her first storefront in July 2021.

“It’s an explosive move, but having a storefront is amazing,” said Oyle, who has lived in Taylorville her whole life. “It’s an extraordinary feeling to know that clients choose to walk in my door to support my business.”

In addition to personal care products, other items available for purchase include houseplants, upcycled clothing, handmade items and decorations, recycled items, and more. In addition to her products, Oyler has about 30 local artists and entrepreneurs who sell their wares in the store.

“Taylorville has always been my go-to storefront,” says Oyler. “I grew up here and always planned to come back after college.”

To combat developing anxiety disorders, Ole seeks peace through her passion for sustainability and entrepreneurship.

“Running a business is full of highs and lows,” Oler said. “I am overwhelmed by the support inside and outside the community. As most retail owners know, entrepreneurs really work 24/7. It’s hard work, but contributing to my town And seeing clients love what I love is very rewarding.”

In addition to normal shopping hours, Down to Earth also hosts craft classes such as candle making and pottery. Customers can also tour a vintage candy counter and a 1969 pinball machine that customers can use for free.

“Our town has a lot of heart and shows great support for their small businesses,” said Oyler. “I’m proud to be in our downtown business district.”
