A man allegedly killed his friend in the Hudson Valley shortly before he was pulled from a local bridge.
Johnny Amaro, 49, of Saugerties, was indicted by a Ulster County grand jury on second-degree murder charges, the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday.

Amaro is charged with intentionally causing the death of Maria L. Lemus, known to her friends and family as “Lucy,” on the morning of September 9. Between January 1, 2022
6.42am and 7.32am on a wooded cul-de-sac on Park Road east of Ulster town.
The indictment follows an investigation by the Ulster Township Police Department with the assistance of the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office and the New York State Police.

Dead woman found in wooded area of Ulster County, New York
Ulster Police Service was alerted at about 8am on September 8 and a deceased was found in a wooded area near Park Road, east of the town of Ulster. 1. Lemus was found dead around 8:23am
Officials said Remus had stab wounds to the chest and deep lacerations to his neck.
Ulster County man charged with murder
Police found Amaro on the railing of the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge at about 7.40am on September 1.
Ulster Police Department Kyle Berardi told the Hudson Valley Post in an email earlier this month: “Amaro was also found to be a suicidal male from the Rhinecliff Bridge in Kingston. (Thursday).”
After he was taken to safety with the help of first responders and some civilians, he commented to police about the location of his friend Lemus, according to the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office.
