Russia’s foreign ministry has slammed Ukraine’s call to remove Russia from the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Russian state news agency TASS reported.
On Monday, the Ukrainian foreign ministry said in a statement that Russia should be excluded from the UN Security Council and from membership in the entire UN. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has in the past called for Russia to be expelled from the United Nations.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova dismissed Kyiv’s statement on Wednesday, saying: “Do nothing. This is exactly what happens when the dogs bark but the caravan moves on.”
Zakharova made the comments to Sputnik radio on Wednesday in response to a question about Moscow’s response.
Here’s some background: The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry accused “serious violations of the norms and principles of international law and crimes committed on Ukrainian territory, in particular war crimes and crimes against humanity, as well as genocide.”
It indicated that once Russia “meets the conditions for membership” of the organisation, it could be readmitted to UN membership on a recommendation.
