Scientists claim we haven’t encountered alien life because intelligent societies tend to wipe themselves out – and humans may be next.
a team based on NASAThe Jet Propulsion Laboratory used a theory formerly known as the large filter to explain their conclusions.
It points out that there have been many other civilizations in the history of the universe, but they all perished before they could make contact.
The report – Avoiding the Big Filter: Alien Life and Humanity’s Future in the Universe – shows that humanity is on the same path.
“We hypothesize that an existential catastrophe may be awaiting as our society moves exponentially toward space exploration,” the report said.
“The big filter has the potential to eradicate life as we know it, especially when the rate of our progress is directly related to the severity of our falls.
“This demonstrates the need for introspection and then appropriate improvements to properly address our predicament and address the challenges and approaches we may be able to mitigate risk to humans and nearly 9 million other species on Earth.”

The non-peer-reviewed report — by Jonathan Jiang, Philip Rosen, Kelly Lu, Kristen Fahy and Piotr Obacz — lists dangers including asteroid strikes, nuclear war, pandemics, climate change and artificial intelligence .
The Great Filter Theory was first proposed in the late 1990s by economist Robin Hanson of George Mason University.
