FBI gathers ‘sufficient evidence’ to charge Biden’s son Hunter with tax and gun purchases U.S. News

The FBI has reportedly gathered enough evidence to charge Joe Biden’s son with tax crimes and making false statements to buy firearms.

Hunter Biden, 52, has been under investigation since 2018 and has denied any wrongdoing.

Now Delaware U.S. Attorney General David Weiss – appointed during the Trump administration – must decide whether to bring charges.

Spokesmen for the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), the FBI and Mr Weiss declined to comment on the case.

Mr. Biden’s attorney, Chris Clark, accused investigators of leaking information about the alleged crimes and urged the Justice Department to “seriously investigate and prosecute” anyone responsible.

Mr Clarke said prosecutors were “seriously and thoroughly weighing” the evidence presented by agents and witnesses, including those for the defence – and called on them not to be “stressed, rushed or criticised” in their work.

The investigation is said to have initially focused on Biden’s finances related to overseas business contacts and consulting work.

He was also accused of lying about documents about buying firearms in 2018, the Washington Post reported, and sources agreed to speak to the U.S. publication on condition of anonymity.

The then-president-elect said he was “deeply proud” of his son, praising him for “overcoming tough challenges” and “only getting stronger.”

In 2014, during his father’s tenure as President Barack Obama’s vice president, Mr Biden revealed his long battle with drug addiction after he was discharged from the Navy Reserve after testing positive for cocaine.
