Biden and Xi meet, G20 Bali summit

Chinese leader Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden “had a frank and in-depth exchange of views” on issues of strategic importance and major global issues in the bilateral relationship, according to a readout of the meeting between the two leaders from China’s foreign ministry.

In a 1,600-word readout, the ministry said the world is big enough for the two countries to coexist and prosper.

Both sides should have a correct understanding of each other’s domestic and foreign policies and strategic intentions.

“China does not seek to change the existing international order, does not interfere in the internal affairs of the United States, and has no intention of challenging or replacing the United States.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Xi Jinping fully explained China’s position on the Taiwan issue during the meeting.

He emphasized that the Taiwan issue is the core of China’s core interests, the cornerstone of the political foundation of China-US relations, and the first insurmountable red line of China-US relations.

“Anyone who tries to split Taiwan from China is violating the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation, and the Chinese people will never let this happen!” it added.

Xi also defended China’s human rights record and governance system, saying the country has a “Chinese-style democracy” suited to its national conditions. He acknowledged the differences between China and the United States, but stressed that they should not be “an obstacle to the development of Sino-US relations.”

“The Chinese nation has a glorious tradition of standing up for itself. Suppression and containment will only strengthen the will of the Chinese people and boost morale.”
