Andie MacDowell Can’t Live Without These 8 Lifestyle Essentials

There may be many downsides to the pandemic, but turning Andie MacDowell into a “bad guy” in the eyes of her children isn’t one of them. Like millions of other women, the 64-year-old actress, model and L’Oréal Paris brand ambassador found herself struggling to find a colorist during the Covid-19 lockdown. “No one goes to the salon,” she tells us via Zoom, her signature South Carolina accent minus the G. No one ever told me I used to look bad! I like it.

Her kids, actresses Rainey and Margaret Qualley, weren’t the only fans of her badass new hair color: Last summer, when she was at L’Oreal Paris Stunning her silver curls at the Oréal Paris fashion show, the photo quickly went viral and it was breathless. Headlines called her decision “the ultimate power move.” While McDowell says she no longer thinks too much about her salt-and-pepper strands — “This is who I am, and I think I’m beautiful,” she says — it came in handy on the set of “On the Way Home,” Her latest multi-generational family drama for Hallmark Channel. “On the show, I had to play two different ages of myself, 19 and now,” she said. In portraying her younger self, McDowell said she donned a wig and bravely rejected 45 and wisdom with a hairnet. “I don’t like to say that my hair has turned gray,” MacDowell said. “I tell people it’s silver—this one-step toner you can use in the shower really helps bring out silvery strands and make them sparkle.”

“I’m totally obsessed with these peppermint balls,” she says. “I carry them everywhere and I always give them away. They have no sugar – they are pure mint and leave the best taste in your mouth! “I’m crazy about the smell of these incenses!” says McDowell. “They make you smell like a spa. I wish L’Oreal would make a fragrance that smells like this because I love it. I wear this on myself and get so many compliments.”

“I’ve always loved red lipstick. If you’re just wearing a T-shirt and jeans, you can put on some lipstick and look glamorous,” says McDowell. “It’s very French. I find silver hair and red lipstick more on-trend. I love this orange-red shade because it really deepens the color of my hazel eyes.”

“These reading glasses are vintage and modern,” she says. “They make frames in all different colors: red, green, amber, pink, blue. I don’t like gray glasses. I prefer tinted reddish shades. They make you look mysterious.”

“In my routine, I don’t wear foundation,” she says. “I just wear a little concealer around the eyes and nose, which can be a bit red. I love this concealer because it doesn’t look cakey.”

“I know people are always worried about fine lines, but it’s not my big thing,” she says. “I have very dry skin, so hydration is really important to me. I use this cream at night to remove my makeup and it leaves my skin glowing, plump and hydrated.”

“I started collecting Hermès scarves 35 years ago,” says MacDowell. “When I go hiking in Griffith Park in LA, I wear them to protect my neck and lower body from the sun. I’ll tell you why: I don’t go out! I don’t do anything but I love Hiking – I do it every day, it’s my favorite thing in the world. So I thought, I might as well enjoy my Hermès scarf!”
